British Glass provides many resources and publications with which to inform the public, mainly with the aim of encouraging people to recycle more and more glass so that we can assist the environment, use energy more efficiently, reduce landfill and the use of raw materials/quarrying and to meet the UK's recycling targets.
Through British Glass, and as individual companies, the industry undertakes major promotional campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of glass recycling and to encourage more people to recycle. These include: literature, public awareness and education programmes.
Examples of initatives include:
Recycle Week (along with other materials organisations) and the annual Christmas Recycling Campaign:
The aim of which is to remind people to recycle their glass food jars and drinks bottles and also to stagger their visits to bottle banks into the New Year, to allow time for bottle banks to be emptied.
Each Christmas the UK consumes almost 5.5 million jars of mincemeat, 12 million jars of pickles and 6.5 million jars of cranberry sauce all packed in glass, but only a small percentage will be recycled.
