Local Authorities

Local Authorities are the all important interface with the public. Providing collection facilities and influencing public participation. Decisions taken by recyling professionals within Local Authorities are crucial to the success of glass recycling.

British Glass is keen to work with Local Authorities by providing objective information and supporting local activity with education and public awareness resources.

Through private investment and glass PRN revenue the glass packaging manufacturers and recyclers directly support increased glass recycling.

Examples of initatives include:

Annual Christmas Recycling Campaign
Every Christmas, British Glass organises the Christmas Recycling Campaign. The aim of the campaign is to remind people to recycle their glass food jars and drinks bottles and also to stagger their visits to bottle banks into the New Year, to allow time for bottle banks to be emptied.

Each Christmas the UK consumes almost 5.5 million jars of mincemeat, 12 million jars of pickles and 6.5 million jars of cranberry sauce all packed in glass, but only a small percentage will be recycled.
