One of the many virtues of glass is that the material is theoretically "infinitely recyclable". Taking our bottles and jars to the glass banks is a way we can
ALL make a positive contribution to the environment. It also takes less energy to recycle glass than to melt down the original raw materials.
Despite the UK glass industry's pioneering commitment to recycling, the current rate achieved in the UK (51%) compares unfavourably with our European neighbours where recycling of 80-90 per cent has been achieved. Why is this?
The main difference between the UK and the European high performers is our collection infrastructure. Countries with the highest performance have a bottle bank density of one to 1,500 people, while the UK has one to 2,700 people. Increasing the number of bottle banks, kerbside schemes and commercial collections is essential to increasing our performance. So is improving public awareness of the benefits of recycling – the most successful European recyclers promote widely, including TV advertising.
